I never said that: Botswana President on AKA death

Botswana President, Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, has said that the late South African Musician, Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA is  “a global icon who has collaborated with local musicians like Zeus, who once represented Botswana at the “Big Brother House”, hosted in South Africa.”

This was part of a communication published by the Botswana Government which  sought to dispel fake news that suggested the president had said AKA is “ his son”. In a detailed press the communication read;

“The Office of the President notes with concern the media narrative that is circulating on social media platforms purporting that His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, President of the Republic Botswana, has said that the late South African Musician, Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA, was like a son to him.

We wish to state for the record that His Excellency the President has never made such a pronouncement. However, the Government of Botswana recognises AKA as a global icon who has collaborated with local musicians like Zeus, who once represented Botswana at the “Big Brother House”, hosted in South Africa.

To this end, we express our heartfelt condolences to the family of Forbes, the People of the Republic of South Africa and his fans. AKA commanded a huge fan base in Botswana and his passing on is a great loss to the creative industry.

Members of the Public are reminded that the family of AKA needs to be given time to mourn the loss of their beloved celebrated son.”
