Guinea beat Malawi to close gap on Zim Warriors, Latest Results, Group table standing

Zimbabwe Warriors need to win  their next home match for the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Malawi and hope for a draw or Swaziland win in the other match.

Today  Guinea came back from a goal down to win 2-1  against  Malawi in a Group L qualifier match played at Kamuzu Stadium this afternoon.

The victory lifts Guinea from bottom spot to second place in the table, above Swaziland on goal difference.

Chiukepo Msowoya put Malawi ahead on 32 minutes but Mohamed Yattara equalised just before half-time.

And visitors Guinea pushed on in the second half, securing an excellent away victory through Idrissa Sylla’s 60th-minute goal.

Guinea are now the biggest threat to Zimbabwe following our 4 nil hammering of Swaziland in Harare yesterday.

With two games remaining, the warriors need to win against Malawi on 3 July to avoid another West Africa headache when they visit Guinea in September.

With three top teams so close on points, here is what is ahead of warriors

Zimbabwe will qualify in three months time if they beat Malawi and Guinea does not win in Swaziland. This is best scenario as Zim is very vulnerable in West Africa.

If Zimbabwe loses to Malawi in Harare, they may need to go and win it in Guinea in order qualify.

In case of points draw after the remaining two matches the winner will be picked based on:

  1. Number of points obtained in games between the teams concerned;
  2. Goal difference in games between the teams concerned;
  3. Goals scored in games between the teams concerned;
  4. Away goals scored in games between the teams concerned;
  5. If, after applying criteria 1 to 4 to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6 to 9 apply;
  6. Goal difference in all games;
  7. Goals scored in all games;
  8. Away goals scored in all games;
  9. Drawing of lots.
