Former DA leader advises Chamisa on party name

Former Democratic Alliance president Mmusi Maimane has joined the wagon calling on MDC-Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa to change his party name.

This follows the announcement by MDC-T that it would be using the Alliance name going forward.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports alleged that MDC-T has already registered the name, and would be using it in the coming polls.

Apparently, Chamisa and his party has vowed not to stay put, saying they won’t let name taken away.

Meanwhile, former cabinet minister and G40 kingpin Jonathan Moyo, posted.

“Khupe’s MDC-T says to field by-election candidates as MDC-ALLIANCE”

“The circus of having one political party (MDC-T) contesting elections in the name of another political party (MDC-A); is an absurdity only possible in Mnangagwa’s Zim!”

And Maimane responded to the tweet saying Chamisa just need to change his party name to ‘Change Alliance’ and proceed with the journey.

“My brother Nelson Chamisa change the organizational name to ‘Change Alliance’ and keep it moving.

“Do not allow this to become a stumbling block. People know who is who and what is what.”

Apparently, on 18 April 2015, at the DA Western Cape Congress, Maimane announced that he would run for federal leader of the DA.

He was backed by prominent businessman Herman Mashaba and on 10 May 2015, Maimane was elected leader of the DA at the party’s 2015 federal congress in Port Elizabeth.

In the process he defeated party chairperson Wilmot James with close to 90% of the vote.

He succeeded Zille as leader of the party and became the first black South African to lead the DA, as well as its youngest leader at the time.

Maimane announced his resignation as federal leader of the DA on 23 October, 2019, ending months of speculation that he would be removed as party leader following the party’s decline in the 2019 general elections.

John Steenhuisen succeeded him as parliamentary leader and interim federal leader.
