Ex-ZANU PF Councilor spills the beans on 2018 ‘Ghost Candidate’ in Kwekwe

A former ZANU PF Councilor has spilled the beans on the internal factions threatening to tear the ruling party apart after sensationally revealing that he was ‘sent by the bosses’ to back an independent candidate who participated in the 2018 elections against the party’s official Kwekwe Central candidate, Kandros Mugabe.

According to Rodger Ross, the former Ward 9 Councilor for Kwekwe, surprise candidate and lawyer Josiniah Maupa contested in the 2018 parliamentary elections at the behest of ‘the bosses’ he could not name.

Party supporters who thronged the Zanu PF Kwekwe District Headquarters for the grassroots mobilizing meeting pushed the controversial former councilor closer to naming ‘the bosses’ who sent him and various other ruling party stalwarts to field an ‘independent candidate’, lawyer Josiniah Maupa who publicly pledged his support for the party’s presidential candidate, and eventual winner President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“To the officials from the Province, I just wanted to know when you are going to deal with the divisions birthed by those who support (shadow MP) Mugabe and the ones supporting (aspiring candidate, Energy) Dhala (Ncube)?” Ross questioned at the hands of the meeting, inviting rumbling responses from the congregated supporters.

“But you guys were responsible for the Hunde Huru Project of Maupa in 2018,” an elderly supporter barefacedly remarked using the vernacular Shona language in response to former councilor Ross.

“It was not us who did it (fielding an independent candidate). We were sent by the bosses,” said Ross, inviting a flurry of responses with the people demanding to know the identity of the bosses who sent them.

The entrance of Maupa into the electoral ring resulted in the ruling party choice, Mugabe performing dismally in a race he fell to the late Kwekwe MP Masango ‘Blackman’ Matambanadzo and second-placed then opposition MDC-A candidate, Blessing Chebundo.

Chebundo has since crossed the floor to the ruling party whilst Mugabe and Dhala, who is State Security Minister Owen ‘Mudha’ Ncube’s nephew, are locked in a do-eat-dog fight to wrestle the sole ticket for Zanu PF candidacy in by-elections set to come up with the late Blackman’s replacement.
