David Mkandawire the footballer, Our Zim Warrior needs your help

The sorry  state of David Mkandawire, a once feared central defender who is now begging in the streets of South Africa is difficult to digest.

Who is David Mkhandawire?

He is a former Zimbabwe international soccer player who played for Amazulu Football Club in Bulawayo as a centre back and represented his country’s football team, Zimbabwe Warriors.

The last time he played for Zimbabwe was in year 2003 when he played in an invitational match for Zimbabwe in Asia.

An Indian team Mohun Bagan Athletic was impressed with Mkandawire during the Afro-Asian Games and they asked the big defender to remain behind for a one-week trial with them.

Mkandawiri later signed for Mohammedan Sporting, one of Asia’s oldest football clubs where he later played as team captain for many years.

zwnews.com has established that Mkandawire helped the team to win a number of trophies and was named man of the match on many occasions.

We are still doing investigations with David’s former employers in India to see how he fared and how his career ended at the Club that has been in existence since the 1890s.

The footballer’s ‘riches to rags’ story seem to have happened sometime after short spells with South African football outfits including Maritzburg United where he was playing up to 2008 when he had a long layoff after tearing his groin muscle.

While there are reports of plans to unite him with his mother and family in Malawi, Mkandawire is a Zimbabwean national, born and bred in the country, he represented his nation well and now needs help from thousands of Zimbabweans and the football fraternity that enjoyed watching him in the good old days. www.zwnews.com
