Floods caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy have swept bodies from a cemetery located on the banks of Umbeluze River near Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, into nearby residences and farms.
The devastating impact of the floodwaters was captured in televised images that revealed many neighbourhoods in Boane District, approximately 25km south-west of the capital, and beyond, were affected.
The scattered bodies pose a significant public health risk. Community members spent the weekend collecting the corpses.
The cemetery, which is over thirty years old and contains numerous unidentified graves, was affected by the floods.
The region has experienced extensive flooding since the cyclone made landfall in the country on Friday.
