The Nigerian Islamist leader Abubakar Shekau  has been fatally wounded following a military raid carried out late last week, Nigerian Army has said.

The Nigerian defence claims to have killed the leader of Boko Haram, Shekau, in an air strike targeting a meeting of the Islamist group’s commanders.

Shekau and other senior militants had gathered for prayers on Friday when they were hit by what the Nigerian army called an “air force raid”.
