Bafana Held by Panama in Durban Friendly as Finishing Woes Persist

Bafana Bafana were held to a 1-1 draw by Panama in an international friendly at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, as Hugo Broos’ side continued their preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The visitors stunned the home crowd early on, taking the lead in the 11th minute through Edgar Bárcenas, who capitalised on Panama’s first real opportunity of the match.

South Africa responded positively and created several chances, but poor finishing proved costly. Teboho Mokoena came close before the break, only to be denied by goalkeeper Luis Mejía, who also produced a strong save to keep out Lyle Foster’s close-range effort.

Bafana eventually found an equaliser shortly after halftime, with Oswin Appollis finishing well after being set up by Khuliso Mudau. Despite continued pressure, the hosts were unable to convert further chances and had to settle for a draw.

The result highlights a recurring issue for Broos’ side, who have struggled to take their opportunities in front of goal — a concern that also surfaced during their recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday at DHL Stadium in Cape Town, as both sides continue fine-tuning their squads ahead of the World Cup in June.

Fans React

The result sparked mixed reactions from supporters, with some questioning the team’s direction and individual performances.

  • Some fans compared Bafana to Orlando Pirates, suggesting inconsistency has crept into the national team’s performances.
  • Others criticised coach Hugo Broos, pointing to midfield struggles and selection decisions.
  • A recurring concern among supporters was the team’s lack of clinical finishing, with many noting that South Africa created multiple chances but failed to convert, while Panama scored from limited opportunities.

Despite the criticism, the friendly provides valuable insight for Broos as he looks to address key issues before the World Cup kicks off.
