MUTARE – At least 29 people were killed on Thursday night after a bus carrying pilgrims overturned between Chipinge and Chimanimani, local officials said.

About 40 other people, all members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) heading for an Easter conference, were being treated at nearby hospitals after suffering injuries.

Speaking at the scene of the accident, Chimanimani MP Joshua Sacco said the bus veered off the road and plunged down an embankment near Jopa market at around 11PM.

The hired St Charles Lwanga School bus heading for Mbungo in Masvingo was coming from Chimanimani.

“Police have told us that they have so far counted 29 people who have died, and scores of others have been injured. It’s a terrible disaster,” Sacco said.
