A Mutare man who bypassed a ZESA meter for more at least 18 months prejudicing the firm at least $900 has been caged two years in prison by local Magistrate Perseverance Makala.

Charles Chaya of Zimunya Township was facing charges of tempering with ZESA property.

Prosecuting Matthew Chimutunga said between October 2015 to April 2017, Chaya tempered with prepaid meter which was installed by ZESA using a non-substandard cable to access free flow of electricity into his house.

The culprit installed an illegal connection from the main breaker direct into the house.

The matter came to light when a ZESA loss controller officer, Fraustino Chikuse visited the area to carry out an inspection.

She discovered that Chaya’s meter was locked with two big keys.

Chikuse demanded for the keys to no avail resulting forcibly opening using a bolt cutter.

That is when she discovered the dirt game and reported Chaya to the police.
